How to use 4GB RAM on 32-bit XP/Vista by enabling PAE

Recently one of my friend bought 2 GB RAM for his PC. He already had 2GB installed and he added more 2GB to his desktop computer.But his XP showed only 2 GB RAM. This is very common problem.By default Windows XP supports only 2GB of RAM on 32-bit systems.It is fact that 64-bit systems can support 4 GB of RAM .But very few people know that even 32-bit systems can support up to 4GB of RAM.This can be done by enabling the PAE(Physical Address Extension) on your PC.Now a days almost all processors support PAE.



How to enable PAE on XP:
------------------------

To enable PAE in Windows XP you have to edit the boot.ini file. Open boot.ini file. It will be there in your system drive. Suppose your OS is installed in C drive then go to run and type c:boot.ini and hit enter.Add “/ PAE” at the end of the file.

It would look something like this:

multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (1) partition (1) WINDOWS = “Microsoft Windows XP Professional” / noexecute = OptIn / fastdetect / PAE

Don’t change anything else in boot.ini or your PC will not boot.Just add / PAE at the end of the line.

Now restart your PC and check if your computer is showing 4 GB RAM. To do this right click on My computer and select properties.Click on general tab and see if it is showing 4GB or not. If it shows then it means that you have done everything correctly and you can use complete 4Gb of your RAM.


Enable PAE under Vista:
------------------------

It is very easy to enable PAE under Vista. Open cmd and type

BCDEdit / set PAE forceenable

Now it should show 4GB of RAM in Vista.

Warning:Use PAE only if you really have 4GB of RAM or your PC may not work properly. Or if you have got some extra money I will recommend you to go for 64-bit system.

Bootable USB: Utility to Create Bootable USB Drive to Install Windows Vista, Server 2008

 

Imagine a situation where you need to install Windows Vista or 7 in a system but you don't have access to DVD Drive. We all know Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7 comes in DVDs and you'll need a DVD Drive to install them. Then how will you install them? The solution is, you can create a bootable USB drive which can be used to install Windows without using DVD drive.

Prerequisites:

• A USB Drive (4 GB or more)
• Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7 ISO image or DVD
• Host OS: Windows Vista (SP1 or SP2), Server 2008 or 7

How to Use:

Once you meet the requirements, run the utility. Its a portable utility so doesn't need installation. Simply run it and check the option "I have read and accepted the following License Agreement".

Now click on OK button and it'll launch the main application.

It also shows a Help window so that you can use the utility easily. The utility requires only 4 easy steps to follow:

• Check USB drive (To check whether your USB drive is attached or not)
• Format USB drive
• Choose DVD or ISO image (To copy the required files to USB drive)
• Start the process to create bootable USB drive

How To Reinstall Windows Without Losing Anything

You can use this method as often as you like when you need to repair something that had gotten corrupted and you don't want to do a clean install.

This is better than doing a windows repair install from the cd because doing that can cause changes to settings and even make it so you can't get updates anymore from microsoft update site because of the 'silent install' they did a year or so ago (unless you rereg some dll files).

1- Start WindowsXP
2- Go to the location of your source files
3- Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.

OR

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend (notice the space between 32 and / )
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it. (be sure it's the full i386 though)

D: is the driver letter where your windows XP Cd is
if D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend doesn't work then try : d:\winnt32 /unattend.

How to Hide ur Data using NTFS ADS feature

Hello friends, today let us discuss about NTFS Alternative Data Streams(ADS).
NTFS ADS are basically used to add extra information to a file. This extra data is know as metadata of that file.
This extra data is usually hidden and window OS doesnt have any tool to view its presence.
except win 2000 has a tool cat in resourse kit.

NTFS ADS can be used to hide data on ur pc without using any software. The NTFS ADS has many advantages as below:
1. There is no limit on the size of streams and there can be more than one stream linked to a normal file. 
2. ADS are not visible in explorer or via command prompt. In fact, their size is also not reported by Windows.
3. You can hide text data, images, videos and even Executables...!!
4. The streams can be attached to drives and folders too.

So now how to create a stream and hide data:
lets take an example here i shall create a stream to hide text data,
first goto CMD and type
notepad test.txt

hit enter, a notepad will open and it will ask u to save , save it and close.DONT TYPE ANYTHING IN IT.
now save and close it.now again open cmd and type following:
notepad test.txt:crypto.txt

hit enter it will again ask to save do it now type the text in notepad titled as text.txt:crypto.txt that u want to hide.

for example type anything like "Be a r3b3l not a p3bbl3"
now save and close.

now in above example the crypto.txt is the stream that we created and the data that we are hiding is "one thing is good about pain it lets u know that u are not d3ad yet." that is the data that we typed in test.txt:crypto.txt notepad.

Now if u go and check the size of test.txt file it will be 0 kb. no matter how much data u are hiding it will be 0 kb if.

Even if u use dir command to find hidden crypto.txt file u cant find it. 
The only way to find ur file is that u must remember the name of file and the stream name.

Create a Password Reset Disk

If you’re running Windows XP Professional as a local user in a workgroup environment, you can create a password reset disk to log onto your computer when you forget your password. To create the disk:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts. 

2.Click your account name. 

3.Under Related Tasks, click Prevent a forgotten password. 

4.Follow the directions in the Forgotten Password Wizard to create a password reset disk. 

5.Store the disk in a secure location, because anyone using it can access your local user account.

Extend Vista/seven Activation For 1 year(360 days)

After installation windows vista/seven will provide users to use the copy without activation for approximately 30 days and after that you should activate the copy inorder to use it further. Here in this post i am going to explain about a simple command line and registry tweak that will enable users to use the copy without activation for around 360 days or 1year.All you have to do is

1. Start Command Prompt. (Press Winkey+R to start Run, type cmd in it and hit enter).

2. Enter the command slmgr –rearm and hit enter.

3. You will be prompted to restart Windows. After restarting, the trial period will be extended for 30 more days






4. You can use this trick after 30 days and approximately 3 times that will provide you 120 days without activation.

After 120 days Do this For Vista:

1. Open the registry editor in Vista.(Press Winkey+R to start Run, and then type regedit in it and hit enter).

2. Go to the following directory using the left pane,



HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionSL





Do This For Windows 7

1. Open the registry editor in Seven.(Press Winkey+R to start Run, and then type regedit in it and hit enter).

2. Go to the following directory using the left pane,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionSoftwareProtectionPlatform





3. Now in the right pane, you will find a DWORD entry named, SkipRearm. Right click on it and press “Modify”. Change the “Value Data” to 1.

4. Restart your computer to apply the changes. That’s all. Now you can perform the previously mentioned(slmgr -rearm) trick 8 more times.

NOTE: The total allowed count for rearm is 330 days or 11 times combined with the default 30 days will make total 360 days for using vista/seven without activation.

Each time after turning on the PC we generally open the same set of applications.

just as example after turning on my PC I normally open my Firefox browser, Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk or Winamp to play songs.Time required to open all this programs can be reduced by using a small application Lacuna Launcher.

Lacuna Launcher is a small freeware that can open multiple programs or files with a single click.

After downloading the application unzip the downloaded file. In that files there are two files which are needed. One is list.txt and other is ll.exe. Open list.txt file and put entries for all the programs you want to open with the single click. After making all the entries in list.txt save it and close it. Then click on ll.exe to launch all theprograms in single click. Check out read me.txt file to know more about this tiny program.

Best utorrent Configuration (Newbie guide)

Firstly uTorrent is my current fav torrent download software. Its the best software in smallest package.

After trying out many different settings I am just sharing my best configuration for utorrent. Obviously your best config may be different because of your network and hardware etc.

You can check your speed from http://www.speedtest.net/ and make settings accordingly.
Options>Preferences:

Global maximum upload rate (kB/s) = 10
√ Allow incoming legacy connections
Global maximum number of connections = 128 (If you don't have bandwidth then more connections dont mean more speed)
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent = 16
Number of upload slots per torrent = 2
√ Use additional upload slots if upload speed < 90% √ Enable DHT Network √ Enable DHT for new torrents √ Enable Peer Exchange √ Enable scraping √ Pre-allocate all files Advanced Settings: peer.lazy_bitfield = *true net.max_halfopen = *40 peer.disconnect_inactive_interval = *600 diskio.write_queue_size = *2560 diskio.read_cache_size = *2560 I have doubled my speed after these settings. And please note that there is a 8fold difference in kilobit and kilobyte.(1kilobyte = 8 kilobits).It took me a while to understand the best settings so I am sharing with you. A well seeded torrent will download at speed of 18. SHORT NOTE: Seeders are people who have already downloaded the file and peers are number of people who are currently downloading the file. You should have more seeders for good speed.
Reduce Upload Limit

Options> Preferences>Connections> Global Bandwidth Limiting> Maximum Upload Rate (kB/s) (set it to whatever you want)

Update

Some people experience speed increase after making peerlazybitfield = false in advanced options.
